I’m newsletter editor at Civic News Company, overseeing email strategy for Chalkbeat, one of the U.S.’s largest nonprofit newsrooms covering education at the local and national level, Votebeat, our vertical dedicated to voting access and election administration, and Healthbeat, our vertical covering public health.

Previously, I was engagement editor at Chalkbeat, first as a one-woman engagement team before expanding that team to three in 2020. I transitioned into my current role in June 2022.

Before joining Chalkbeat in 2019, I spent a year as a senior editor at The New Republic, overseeing audience engagement and development. I'm grateful I got the chance to work with the great J.J. Gould again before we both left TNR; he's the guy who hired me at The Atlantic, bringing me all the way across the country from sunny Southern California. 

In November 2017, I finished a stint as managing editor of TheAtlantic.com. Based in Washington, D.C., I oversaw operations for the entire online staff on a day-to-day basis, while working with then-executive editor Matt Thompson to guide the long game. 

I first joined The Atlantic in 2015 as assignment editor. I commissioned and edited work from freelancers and directed promising pitches to the appropriate section editors. I kept the lines of communication open with readers to find out what stories we weren't telling and which questions they hadn't seen answered.

I also conceived of and hosted a web series, “2016 Distilled,” in collaboration with our Politics & Policy team, to demystify the democratic process and arm readers/viewers with information ahead of the election. 

Before joining The Atlantic, I was engagement editor (Sept. 2013 – March 2014) and then deputy editor (March 2014 – Aug. 2015) at Voice of San Diego, an investigative news nonprofit, where I also co-hosted a weekly podcast. Before that, I was a reporting fellow on the business desk of the Los Angeles Times (June – Aug. 2013), covering clean technology. I earned my master's in journalism from USC in 2013, my bachelor's in rhetoric from Bates College in 2010, and in the gap year between, worked as editorial assistant and interim news editor at NUVO, my hometown's alt-weekly.

I grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, and remain extremely protective of it. I have two dogs, Wyatt and Butter, and a formerly feral cat named Hal, who as it turns out is a lady (which I learned after naming her) who deigns to tolerate me.
